Mauritius features two music genres that originated on the island. The traditional music of Mauritius, known as sega music or Seggae Music. Other prominent genres include reggae, zouk, soukous, and Indian music, but these genres did not originate in Mauritius, despite the fact that famous local artists like Kaya successfully merged reggae and sega music to form Mauritian Seggae.
Mauritian musicians are highly gifted, and their music has progressed to worldwide levels throughout the years. There are numerous jazz and blues artists on the island.

Blakkayo, born Jean Clario Gateaux in 1978, is from Bois d’Oiseaux, Flacq. He became interested in music, particularly reggae music, after performing as a dancer in the 1990s. Listening to Kaya’s seggae, a mix of Mauritian sega and reggae, made him recognise that he could use music to communicate his beliefs and help people see who and what is real. He even wrote his own songs, which became freestyle music.

Blakkayo’s mission is to preserve Mauritian culture and music via the creation and promotion of reggae, seggae, and dancehall.

Laura Beg, a musical prodigy, began singing at the age of 16 at Grand Baie taverns. Her varied repertoire includes seggae, reggae, zouk, and sega, making her a local favourite. Laura’s ability has been recognised around the world, including in Europe, Australia, and Reunion Island, through private gatherings and concerts.
Laura is a beloved personality in the Mauritian music scene, with three albums and countless artistic collaborations. She also resonates globally. Her performances have taken place on Reunion Island, in Australia, and around Europe, including the coveted Miss Reunion finale in 2011.

The debut album, “Tik Tiker,” released in 2011, was a huge success, with the title track still enthralling Mauritian dance floors.

He had no desire to complete his education and instead aspired to be a singer. In 2010, he unexpectedly rose to notoriety online after filming a freestyle video with friends in Roche-Bois.

His sudden rise to prominence pushed him to focus his newfound fame on launching his musical career.
