Tems recounts how illness, surgery delayed her debut album. Temilade Openiyi, better known as Tems, talks about how she had to delay the release of her first record because she was sick.
In a recent interview with the New York Times, Tems—who became famous in 2020 after being on Wizkid’s summer hit song “Essence”—talked about her illness, which required surgery and a six-month recovery period. She said that this meant that her debut album would not be out until 2021 as planned.
The opera singer who was nominated for an Oscar said that she instead published her second long play, “If Orange Was a Place.” She also said that her fight to get better gave her ideas for her new music, which was about taking life as a warrior. This time, though, the singer didn’t say what illness it was that required surgery.

Tems said:
“Being a warrior is about not giving up; even if they cut your leg, you walk on your knees, you fight on your knees using what you have — and that’s good enough.”
It is important to note that Tems’ long-awaited debut record, “Born In The Wild,” will be released on June 7. In the same month, she will start her first world tour as the main act.
