Political Profession In the early 1990s, Nathi Mthethwa formally commenced his political career by affiliating himself with the African National Congress (ANC). ANCYL KwaZulu-Natal was where he held the position of regional secretary from 1990 to 1992. 

Additionally, Mthethwa served with diligence on the ANC’s National Executive Committee from 1997 to 2007.

Mthethwa was elected to the National Assembly of South Africa in 2004. He held several positions during his tenure in this position, including chairperson of the Minerals and Energy Portfolio Committee from 2004 to 2008 and chief whip of the ANC in the National Assembly from 2008 to 2010.

President Kgalema Motlanthe appointed Nathi Mthethwa to the position of Minister of Safety and Security in September 2008. He held this position until his appointment as Minister of Culture and the Arts in 2014.

During his tenure as Minister of Police, Mthethwa exercised authority over the South African Police Service (SAPS). Nevertheless, the catastrophic Marikana massacre transpired in 2012 under his leadership, resulting in the loss of 34 miners’ lives at the hands of law enforcement. 

The Marikana Commission of Inquiry reached the determination that Mthethwa had failed to discharge his obligations regarding the provision of adequate oversight and direction to the SAPS.
