Many girls’ dreams in the late 1990s were plagued by the legend of “Madam Koi Koi,” particularly those of boarding school students.
An unsettling folklore described a mysterious woman with high-heeled shoes who would go through the dimly lit passageways at night in search of retribution.
It was unknown where this tale started until Jay Franklin made an effort to enlighten us about Madam Koi Koi’s true origins.
The Origin: Madam Koi Koi, Netflix’s most recent offering, is the first Nollywood horror series available on the service and seeks to fill in the blanks around this eerie mythology.

On October 31, 2023, the first episode of the series, named “The Awakening,” was released, offering us a chilling preview of what’s to come.Ireti Doyle as Mother Superior, Jude Chukwuka as Baba Fawole, Martha Ehinome as Amanda, Nene Nwanyo as Edna, Chuks Joseph as Lashe, Kelvin Solomon as Tokunbo, Temidayo Akinboro as Kayode, Ejiro Onojaife as Ibukun, Deyemi Okanlanwon as Inspector Theophilus, Baaj Adebule as Inspector Oscar, Baaj Adebule as Inspector Oscar, Bolaji Ogunmola as Omolewa, and Omawumi Dada as Madam Koi Koi are among the ensemble cast members in the film.
The story takes place at St. Augustine Catholic College, where Amanda’s mother, who is struggling financially, has enrolled her. Amanda meets four haughty and criminally inclined guys on her first day; Mother Superior seems to be encouraging their behavior in an attempt to win a competition and get money for the school. A schoolmate is gang-raped by the lads, which results in a horrifying and unexplained death. This starts a series of unpleasant incidents and inquiries. Who or thing is responsible for these horrific events? Only the second episode will tell us.
The characters all performed well in their parts, ranging from those who don’t say anything at all to those who talk excessively, as seen by Sister Ruth. Despite her silence, her emotion of terror upon learning of Madam Koi’s return is clear to witness. Koi talked a lot while lounging about.
While Ireti Doyle’s accent at the beginning while she was on call looked unduly forced, she did a fantastic job playing the roles of Mother Superior, a nun, and the principal of the school.
Chuks Joseph, who played Lashe, was also excellent; he captured every conceivable shade of conceit and narcissism in the role, which gave the film more dimension.
The series’ painstaking attention to detail is one of its standout features. The antique Mercedes parked in the school compound and the vintage Volkswagen Beetle driven by a police officer both perfectly capture the vibe of the 1990s. The characters’ historical costumes and even their hairstyles, as seen on characters like Inspector Theophilus, take us back in time, and the set design does a great job of capturing the period. The set and costume designs show that the lead crew completed their work before delivering.
A glimpse into Madam Koi Koi’s past and the incidents that sparked her icy passion for vengeance is provided at the end of the first episode.
One thing is certain as we await the publication of the second episode on November 7, 2023: “The Origin: Madam Koi Koi” transports us on an engrossing voyage into a school legend, serving as a reminder that certain stories, no matter how horrifying, have mysteries that are just waiting to be discovered.
